What is a VARR?

It is a written request to the Disability Rating Activity Site (D-RAS) made after accepting the Informal Physical Evaluation Board (IPEB) findings or receiving the Formal Physical Evaluation Board (FPEB) findings. The request must be made in writing to either the Physical Evaluation Board Liaison Officer (PEBLO) or to the Physical Evaluation Board (PEB).

What can the D-RAS review and accomplish for you?

A VARR allows the D-RAS to review the percentages assigned to each unfitting condition and possibly increase those percentages.

When should you request a VARR?

While some service members request a VARR after the IPEB, you only have one VARR as a matter of right. Therefore, it is recommended making the request after the results from the FPEB have been received.

Why wait until after the FPEB to request a VARR?

The D-RAS is limited to reviewing only percentages assigned to unfitting conditions by the PEB. If you successfully add new unfitting conditions at the FPEB that were either fitting at the IPEB or not considered by the IPEB, the D-RAS can review more conditions and it provides a greater opportunity for relief.

Should you seek assistance in drafting a VARR?

Absolutely. With qualified representation helping you draft the VARR, a competent representative will outline why a higher percentage is warranted, per the VA Schedule of Ratings, and attach the necessary documentation to prove that an increased rating is appropriate.

Conclusion

A service member should weigh all options with competent representation when considering a VARR in order to secure the best possible outcome.
